Moving to Australia? Where should you start?

Posted on 19 August 2015

Australia is pretty big - in fact you can fit most of Europe inside of it!

Let that sink in for a second…!

And with this vast size comes a diverse country full of contrasts and amazing experiences - from nature wonders to iconic buildings. Sporting events to beach side living.

Yup Australia is as awesome as it is big!

So if you’re planning on moving to Australia or travelling to Australia it can be a bit tricky to decide where you want to start the adventure, so here’s a few things to keep in mind when planning where to arrive in Australia…

The Weather

Ok lets bust this out in the open right now. Australia DOES have a winter time and it CAN get cold. Sorry to break your postcard perfect bubble on that one guys but we don't want you landing in Melbourne mid June expecting to bust out your factor 5 and go sun bathing!

So keep in mind the season when you land - Aussie winter its going to be rather chilly down south in the likes of Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne whereas Darwin and Cairns will be roasting hot.
On the flip side though if you want to sample the Aussie snow scene it’s the perfect season to head to the mountains down that way - so it depends on what you like doing!

The Lifestyle

Like every country in the world Australian cities all have their own personalities so do some research and pick one that suits you the best.

The arty, musical cafe culture of Melbourne is a hub for many people heading to Australia with its more European feel.

Sydney on the other hand is the iconic Australian city - opera house, Sydney harbour bridge, Bondi Beach, it’s the postcard version of life Down Under!

Cairns on the other hand is much smaller a hub for those who love diving and who aren't so keen on the skyscraper skycaps of many other Aussie locations.

Work v Play

We’re pretty sure you’re heading to Australia as the result of hard work and saving like a trooper - so congratulations!

But this also means it may be part of your plan to have some downtime and explore some more before settling into work.
If that’s the case your starting city needs to be that - a place to start. If you’re planning on working in Sydney but want to explore more of Oz beforehand it makes no sense to start there, maybe fly into Brisbane and spend a couple weeks working your way down the coast before getting stuck into the job search?

If you’re just heading out on holiday you’ll probably have more of an idea of your route and your starting point will be a bit more organically figured out.

Key Dates

And with that in mind key dates can also have a huge impact on where you start.

Heading to Sydney for xmas and new year and landing in Australia around October? Well then it makes a lot of sense to fly into Cairns and work your way down.

Want to spend your birthday road tripping on the Great Ocean Road and land a few days before it? Then Melbourne is the spot for you.

Write down any birthdays/events that are helping shape your travels and map out you route around them - you’ll soon find there’s an obvious choice on where to arrive in Australia!

What’s shaping your arrival in Australia - which Aussie city will you be flying into?
